New Studio Album ‘Delta Machine’ Set For Release March 26th on Columbia Records
Depeche Mode to Debut Video for First Single ‘Heaven’ on VEVO Next Friday, February 1st
(Columbia Records; New York, NY; January 24, 2013) – Depeche Mode have announced they will release their highly anticipated 13th studio album, entitled Delta Machine, on March 26th worldwide via Columbia Records. The album, recorded over the last year in Santa Barbara, California and New York City, was produced by Ben Hillier and mixed by Flood. In addition to the album announcement, Depeche Mode have also confirmed that the video for the first single “Heaven” will debut on VEVO next Friday, February 1st.

Alongside a standard CD format, Depeche Mode will release Delta Machine in an exclusive Deluxe Edition with four additional new tracks and accompanied by a 28 page hardcover book including photos by longtime artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn (please see track listing, as well as album and single configurations below).

Martin Gore said of the release, “Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern. I want people to feel good about listening to this record, to get some kind of peace. It’s just got something magical about it.”

Dave Gahan added, “With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album. When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode Sound. Delta Machine is no different, and I can’t wait for all of our fans to hear it.”

Following the release of their new album, Depeche Mode will embark on a European stadium tour, kicking off in Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park on May 7th. They will perform 34 shows in 25 European countries, featuring appearances at Milan’s famed San Siro Stadium, the Stade De France in Paris, and Moscow’s Locomotive Stadium before wrapping up the European leg of their tour in Minsk, Belarus on July 29. A full North American tour will follow, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Policy of Truth + Flood and Gareth Jones

From Violator... a DM high watermark and many fan's favourite album.  Produced by Flood, who also worked with Nitzer Ebb, U2, PJ Harvey, Smashing Pumpkins etc.  (Sorry about the stupid WB logo on the video...)

Gareth Jones- Co-produced much of the band' 'dark phase' in Berlin.

Home + Tim Simenon and Daniel Miller

'Home' came off the 'Ultra' album which was the first DM album after Alan Wilder's departure.  As Alan had such a hand in the overall sound of DM, fans wondered how the new music would shape up. Tim Simenon from English dance act 'Bomb the Bass' was hired as producer and played a very influencial role on Ultra.  Tim had previously remixed 'Everything Counts' and 'Strangelove'.

I would have liked Tim to continue producing DM, as the current production team doesn't really 'get it' I don't think.  'Ultra' is an under-rated album.  It has some very strong songs, some excellent electonica, and some excellent performances.  It also features more input from Daniel Miller- Mute records boss and producer of much of DM's early work.

In Your Room

Great video, and a great track from the 'rock' nineties DM period.

Behind the Wheel (Live)

Live at the Rose Bowl California 1988, when Depeche Mode had taken the USA by storm... I love it at 2:08 when Dave and Martin realize how big a deal it is and share those smiles with each other.

Still in California- if you can believe the following report- 10,000 people turned up to an in-store record signing by DM in LA in 1990.  It made the news!  And the Riot Cops were called... Crazy!

Somebody (live 2010)

Alan Wilder left in 1995 after joining DM in 1982.  He was the studio boffin (and my favorite DM member), so when he left, it cast doubts as to the band's future.  History has shown that they survived and still released records.  Some would argue however, that they have never been as good without Alan.

Alan leaves...
Alan sells his DM history...

But Not Tonight

Today's Depeche Mode video is 'But Not Tonight'

But Not Tonight is a firm fan favorite in the USA where it was released as a single, pretty much to the bafflement of the band, as it was a throw-away B-side in the UK.  However, the boys soon understood that it would help them develop their fanbase in the States... which it did.  See the '101' documentary to witness how huge they became by the late eighties.  Kudos the the US label guy.  He clearly knew what he was doing.

A lot of people like this song because it is more 'positive' than the bleaker tracks from the Black Celebration album of the same period.
